November 24, Day 164 – Santa Rosa Island, MM 217.4 to Burnt Mill Creek MM277.7

We got an early start this morning and decided to make a long run to get closer to Panama City.

We had lots of dolphin encounters today. Too bad it was cloudy all day or Linda would have had much better pictures. She took close to a hundred pictures though, so maybe there will be a couple of good ones.

We arrived at the anchorage just before dark and dropped the hook for the night. We will head for Panama City Marina first thing in the morning. We will stay there a couple of days, including Thanksgiving Day.

We may even get to see Chuck & Jan Varney this week (Chuck and Gerry worked together at NSA). They are going to be near us in Dothan, AL for a couple of days and might be able to break away to come visit for a while.

The runway at Hurlbert AFB. Gerry spent time here in the military. There were lots of planes in the air when we left this morning.

Churches are definitely different in this part of the country .... they have a Spanish look

Approaching Ft. Walton Bridge

We passed a cute restaurant on the waterway named Fish Lipz

This part of Florida is known as the Emerald Coast

There are lots of condos in this area .... here are just a few of those we saw

We saw a strange vessel on the water .... probably some kind of work boat

Took lots of pictures of dolphins as they were with us often during the day ..... but it was cloudy so the pictures didn't turn out so good ..... we'll post a couple, but hope for sunnier days to take more.

Another dolphin shot. Sometimes we'd have 3 or 4 at our bow and they'd run with us for 5-10 minutes.

Approaching the Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge. We'd been traveling through Choctawhatchee Bay for a couple of hours at this point.

Here we are approaching the area known as the "Grand Canyon". Not much like the real Grand Canyon, but the shoreline was a little different .... it actually reminded us of the Tenn-Tom waterway.

Some of the "Grand Canyon" shoreline

Humm .... don't think I'd like walking down those steps; looked like they were in disrepair

More of the shoreline .... yup, looks like the Tenn-Tom

.... and still more of the shore. It was actually quite pretty, even with the overcast sky

Some of the bushes along the shore. At first thought they had little yellow flowers on them, but I think the leaves were just turning yellow .... maybe Florida's version of autumn leaves

A shot of the West Bay Creek Bridge. It would soon be getting dark. Fortunately, we were within an hour of our destination for this evening.

We completed the dreaded crossing on Tuesday. Glad its behind us! Your trawler will have a smoother ride than our boat. We are now in Clearwater. Have a happy Thanksgiving in the Vineyard!
