January 22, Day 211 – In Fort Myers

This morning we woke to wind and fog. During the night it had rained but by this morning it was mostly just a drizzle. We spent the morning doing chores (Gerry worked) and around noon we met up with Michael and Jana to go to the RV Show that is currently at the Civic Center. However, as we were heading out, Gerry got a call from the mechanic he had called earlier about our main cabin heating/air conditioning problem. He was at the marina and could come right over. Gerry walked back to the boat so the mechanic could look at our system and the rest of us walked into town to look around. The town itself is nice – lots of old and/or unique buildings. Unfortunately, the economy has left many store fronts empty. Within the hour Gerry called to say all was well with the HVAC system (just needed a charge) and he was on his way into town.

We called a cab to pick us up and take us to the RV show. We thought we might be able to pick up a few items for the boat as RV and boat systems use a lot of the same products; however, often RV parts are cheaper than boat parts. We bought a few items but, considering the cost of the taxi, it probably wasn’t worth the trip.

Later in the evening we walked into town to have pizza and listen to the free concert they have every Friday night. The pizza was pretty good, the music was great (Gerry bought a CD from the performers - think this is the 5th of the trip), but the most fun part was people watching. A little after ten, the old folks called it a night and headed home. All in all, a pretty fun day.

A shot of downtown Ft. Myers
The old Lee County Bank. It was built in 1911 as a General Store. In 1927 the county bank moved in. Today it serves as an antique store.

The statue honoring "Uncommon Friends". The friends were Edison, Ford and Firestone, the fathers of the American Industrial Revolution. There is a large museum here that we hope to visit next week dedicated to the three.

A shot of Michael and Jana while we were "out on the town". We had fun.
