January 18 Day 207– In Pelican Bay

Had a nice leisurely breakfast of blueberry pancakes this morning and just sort of hung out for awhile. A little after noon we decided to try a little fishing and exploring of the area. One of the guidebooks mentioned a dinghy sidetrip to Murdock Bayou that would lead to the lake-like body of water we saw yesterday (the one with the alligator sign). It cautioned that it was very shallow but well worth the effort to try to get there. Well, to make a long story short, we tried, but failed. It was too shallow to get in, even with just paddling the dinghy. We also didn’t meet with any success in the fishing department. There were fish jumping everywhere, but they weren’t biting.

As the sun started to set, it got quite cool so we headed back to the boat. We had happy hour on Monk’s Vineyard with Jana and Michael …. dark and stormy’s. After that, we had a quick dinner, watched a little TV and then off to bed. Boy, life on the hook is hard.

Second Star in the glow of the morning sunrise

We went out fishing in the afternoon. Here's a photo of Michael and Jana not catching anything (which is exactly what we caught)

This was a shuttleboat that took guests on Coya Costa to other islands/keys in the area. The pilot definitely knew the area well as he went quite fast and weaved in and out of the shallow water

The banks were all lined with mangroves

Oops ..... is someone aground??

This is the entrance through the mangroves into the lake .... but unfortunately we couldn't make it any further

Back at the boat we watched the sunset
