January 17, Day 206 – Punta Gorda to Pelican Bay at Cayo Costa

The rain that was forecast never did materialize. This morning when we awoke it was overcast, but showed signs of clearing. Gerry spent some time with the other Monk owners, Bob and Nancy on Winsome, getting more tips on the Bahamas. They have been there several times and were willing to share a few pointers with us.

We finally got underway at noon. The first part of the ride was a little bumpy, but the wind soon died, the sun came out and the seas flattened; in other words, it turned into a beautiful day. We arrived at our anchorage a little after 3:00. The entrance was a bit tricky with a shoal and shallow water, but we’d gotten advice from several people that had anchored in Pelican Bay several times and so, going in slow, we had no problem.

After anchoring we did a few chores and then took down the dinghy so we could explore over the next couple of days. We went to the dinghy dock at Cayo Costa State Park and took the trail to the other side of the island and the Gulf. We watched the sunset and then walked back to the dinghy dock. A short dinghy ride and we were back at the boat.

We grilled wurst for dinner, watched a little TV and then off to bed. There is a new moon, so without any moonlight it was very dark outside.

We had dolphins run with us for quite awhile today .... so took several shots. Here are a few

This is the entrance to the anchorage

We drove up almost to the beach and then turned left

We started down the road to the beach

It was overgrown in spots, almost to the point of being a tunnel

A shot down a side trail - quarantine trail

Very dense palm trees were everywhere

We came across this sign

.... so you certainly won't catch us swimming here

A shot up the beach

... and a shot down the beach

The sunset over the water. A nice end to the day
