July 7, Day 24 - In Shelburne

Linda woke up way before Gerry and went for a walk. Very nice area for walking as the shipyard is at the “end of the road” so only local traffic, and not much of that at 5:30 in the morning.

Decided we would take a taxi into Burlington and explore the area. Gerry had been here several times on work-related trips, but it was a first for Linda. Took rain jackets because, as usual, there was a threat of rain. Strolled through the downtown shopping/mall area. (Looks a lot like the Bolder, CO downtown area). The entire Hudson/Lake Champlain area is celebrating its 400th anniversary and this week happened to be the big celebration in Burlington, so there were lots of activities going on.

We ate lunch down by the waterfront at a place called Madera’s. Pretty good food. While having lunch Gerry decided we should walk to the closest West Marine and then call a taxi from there for our return trip to Shelburne. We needed to get a yellow quarantine flag for our entry into Canada as somehow ours has disappeared. He estimated it was about 2 miles away …. A nice walk, especially since it wasn’t raining, but a bit overcast so it wasn’t too hot. Well, the 2 miles stretched into 3, then 4, then …….. we gave up, especially when we saw a taxi driving by. The return trip cost way more than the first one, but since we were exhausted we were more than willing to pay. Oh, did I mention that most of the walk was uphill ! ! ! While on the walk, we were passed by about 200 bicyclists. A group of what appeared to be high school students from New York on a biking/camping trip. Their support vehicles were piled high with sleeping bags and associated gear.

Back on the boat we caught up with a few chores and then got ready to go out to dinner. Jim Karl had called and said he and wife, Barb and daughter, Chris would pick us up at around 6:00 for dinner. Went to the Bearded Frog for dinner. Food was good, company was great. During the course of the evening we related our adventures in trying to find the West Marine. It appears that we walked right past it. Jim did say that it wasn’t well marked and sat behind the Staples store. We were going to go into Staples to get an ink cartridge for the printer, but Gerry didn't know the model number, so we didn’t bother. If we had, we probably would have noticed the West Marine. Oh well, we did walk off lunch.

After all our walking (and eating) we were tired, so it was off to bed.

Boathouse at the waterfront in Burlington

ECHO (Ecology, Culture, History and Opportunity of the Lake Champlain Basin) building. Not only is it a colorful building, but the grounds were colorful also .... lots of flowers.

Interesting critters .... perhaps they guard the city of Burlington

The rainbow after the storm ..... still searching for the pot of gold.
