July 2, Day 19 - In Whitehall

We decided to spend today at Whitehall. We have free dockage with water and electricity. That’s too good to pass up, so we’re staying put for today. Spent early morning on chores, including blog updates. We’ve decided it’s a lot of work to keep current, and worse if you let it get behind.

At 10:00 we walked to the Skenesborough Museum. It’s only a few hundred feet away, so not much of a walk. The museum houses railroad and canal memorabilia, Revolutionary War artifacts and collections of tools and toys. It was really very interesting. Some pictures are included below. After the museum, we took a walk and explored the town. There is a lot of history in this area. Whitehall is the birthplace of the American Navy. The harbor was important to the cause of the Revolution. In May of 1775, Benedict Arnold’s men took over Skene’s schooner which became the first ship of the American Navy. Additional vessels were built here and were successful in the Battle of Valcour Island, at the north of Lake Champlain in October of 1776.

In the afternoon Gerry washed down the boat and Linda went to the local Laundromat, then out to dinner at a place called the Captain’s Restaurant. It had been recommended by a couple on a boat parked next to us at the dock. Reasonable prices and home cooked food. We plan on leaving early in the morning, so it will be an early night for us. Our plans are to anchor out for the next several days. Marinas and anchorages will probably all be crowded because of the holiday so we want to get an early start.

This and several of the pictures below are from the museum we visited. This is an old fire engine hanging from the rafters of the museum

Do you know what this is ???? We do.

The city's offices plus information center. It was very nice ... showers and restrooms and they left the building open for boaters from 7 a.m. to 9 pm.

Sasquatch greeted visitors to the Center

While taking a walk noticed an abandoned building. I thought these were just posters hung on the boarded windows, but they were actual paintings by a local artist painted on the old wooden boards.

Now that's a BIG chair

A "drive thru" theater. Actually it's a theater built on an old abandoned bridge.
