April 4, Day 283 – In Harbortown Marina, Merritt Island

We were up fairly early this morning, considering we had no place to go. Remember the birds we showed in our blog yesterday – the ones sitting in the trees. Well, they were still there this morning and with the first light of dawn decided they needed to chirp away. In actuality, squawk was more like it. We both got up and soon decided we might as well take a walk. There is not much around this area as far as a town is concerned. We walked up the road towards the river and ended up at the same area we had seen yesterday by boat – the Banana River where it intersects with the Canaveral Barge Canal.

Back at the boat, Gerry worked on a few odds and ends and Linda scrubbed and rinsed down the boat. It had been 12 days since we stayed in a marina and had access to fresh water, so we’d definitely accumulated a lot of salt, sand and dirt. Now, at least for a few hours, the boat was clean.

At around 6:00 we met down by the pool for happy hour. It was a combination of Loopers and MTOAers (Motor Trawler Owners Association). We will be attending the MTOA Rendezvous in St. Augustine next week. We called it an early night as we plan on getting up around 5:00 tomorrow morning. We hope to be pulling out of our slip before 5:30 and heading for the Banana River to see the Space Shuttle launch at 6:21. Hope the weather is good and everything goes as planned.

We headed out for our morning walk. This is a shot of the marina office and restaurant, Nautical Spirits.

We spotted some turkey vultures feasting on a couple of dead fish .... yumm

We noticed a third cruise ship had pulled into Port Canaveral. They're probably there to watch the shuttle launch.

We found these trees to be quite interesting. The needles are long and feathery.

Here's a close up

We spotted a pair of osprey

.... and a heron

Happy (Easter) hour by the pool

A shot of Monk's Vineyard and Second Star (and captains) at the dock
