September 9, Day 88 - Mackinaw City to Charlevoix

We got an early start as planned. The lake was flat as a pancake the whole way to Charlevoix and very uneventful (just the way we like it).

Emotion III was going to Bay Harbor, but they changed their mind about halfway there and came to Charlevoix. We docked next to each other in the state marina – a very nice place – for $1/ft. Works for us. The only complaint is that the wifi is only available in the office area and the phone service is poor. We can live with that.

We walked through the town which was charming and very clean. We went to the recommended fish market (John Cross Fisheries) and bought some whitefish dip (this should be interesting) and some salmon for dinner tonight. Linda went to the grocery store for some other provisioning while Gerry brought the fish stuff back to the boat.

Bob & Joyce Mueller knocked on our door after we finished dinner (which, by the way, was excellent). They have done the loop twice and are the designated harbor hosts for Charlevoix. We had a good chat and again, got lots of good advice on what to expect for the next part of the trip.

We are going to try and make it to Frankfort tomorrow and that will allow us to fool around the rest of the way to Holland. If the lake kicks up, we would like to have a couple of days that we can just hang out and wait for it to settle down before we head to Holland.

Michel wants to do some fishing, and we are thinking about chartering a fishing boat between here and Ludington (where they plan to head to the western shore of the lake). Gerry is interested as well, so we (the women) need to find good shopping ashore before they can take off to play with the fish.

Long day tomorrow, so off to bed

Mackinac Bridge or "The Mighty Mac" as it is known locally. It is the largest suspension bridge in the world. As we passed under the bridge we were leaving Lake Huron and entering Lake Michigan.

One of the many lighthouses along the way

The shoreline along the lake. Many, many sanddunes

Markers at the inlet to Charlevoix

A restaurant just before the bridge

The bridge opening. It opens on the half hour only, but we timed it so we only had to wait a few minutes

Grounds at the marina. It was very nice and the dockmaster was very friendly and helpful

Monk's Vineyard (and Emotion III) at the marina

While walking to the fish market, we noticed some very nice homes ... as nice as those on Mackinac Island

Another nice home
