September 22, Day 101 - Joliet to Seneca

We first awoke about 4:00 am to a heavy rain and ran around closing everything up. It was short lived and we went back to bed. It was cloudy and cool when we finally left about 10:00. We decided to go to Seneca, instead of Ottawa. We travelled with Emotion 3 and Second Star (Krogen Manatee – 36’) with Michael and Jana LaPorte.

We passed under 9 bridges and chatted with 2 large tows on the way down the river. We locked through Dresden Lock tied to the barge being pushed by one of the tugs. That was different, but pretty simple. Second Star has an AIS (automatic identification system) that allows them to identify any large barge traffic in the area. That proved very helpful when we came upon a 9 barge tow in a narrow area of the Illinois River. We knew he was there before we could see him and were able to call the tow and get his advice on how he would like us to approach him – cool stuff.

We passed through 2 locks today and ended up staying at the Spring Brook Marina. The price was good at $1/ft, but the best part was the restaurant, Andrew’s on the Riverfront. This was the best food for the price we have seen on the whole loop. We had a fantastic dinner and drinks for less than $50 per couple. The ambiance, the company we were with (Michel, Carole, Michael, & Jana), and the dinner all made for a wonderful experience and the perfect end for the day.

We plan to go to Ottawa tomorrow. Another short trip, but free docks, electric, water, and close to a grocery store. We may have to take the dinghy’s and come back to Seneca for dinner though – it was that good!!

Entering the Brandon Road Lock

The lockmaster houses we saw on the Rideau and Trent-Severn Canal systems have been replaced by U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Buildings .... functional, but not as cute

House boat/cottages we saw along the way

Emotion 3 tied to the barge as they locked through the Dresden Lock

... and Monk's Vineyard tied to the barge. It actually ended up being one of the easiest locks we've done
