Cruising through the Space Coast to the Treasure Coast

11/30 – 12/3 – Our travels over the next few days took us from Palm Coast to Port St. Lucie. Florida seems to delight in naming each section of its Coast something different. There is the First Coast, the Space Coast, the Treasure Coast and the Gold Coast (all of which are on the East Coast) and there are also special names for the sections of the West and Gulf coasts. Suffice it to say that our travels over the past 4 days took us through all of the Space Coast and ended in the Treasure Coast in Port St. Lucie.

The first day we had a short run and anchored in Rockhouse Creek where we were the only boat. On Wednesday we had a long run departing at 7:00 in the morning and arriving at Cocoa a little after 4:00. We took a side trip up the Canaveral Barge Canal to get diesel at Harbortown Marina. They had the cheapest fuel prices in the area. It was a very windy day and the anchorage at Cocoa was quite bumpy all night.

On Thursday we made our way from Cocoa to the Pine Island anchorage (just north of Vero Beach) where we managed to run aground. The water was very shallow and after anchoring we only had 6 inches under our keel. We decided to move closer to the spoil island where we determined the water was deeper and, in the process, we ran aground. We were able to work the boat off quite easily and finally got the anchor set and had a comfortable night.

We departed early on Friday and made it to Port St. Lucie mid afternoon. We are staying at a free dock (compliments of some MTOA’ers) at the condo complex of Tarpon Bay Yacht Club. We had never been up the St. Lucie River before so this was new cruising ground for us. Ed Neel (MTOA Port Captain for the area) was waiting on the dock at 3:00 to help us with our lines. Later that evening, Ed and Delores invited us for a yummy pork loin dinner prepared by Delores. Once again, MTOA Port Captains proved they are the greatest in providing help and hospitality. We plan on spending several days here doing chores, looking at property and waiting for Michael and Jana on Second Star to catch up with us.

Departing Palm Coast

Looking back at the canal as we entered the ICW

We had many dolphin playing with us today

Palm trees and snowmen

Three of the Daytona Beach bridges

We passed a spoil island with hundreds of pelicans.
We almost ran aground looking at them.

Our anchorage in Rockhouse Creek.  The lighthouse is

Our morning departure from Rockhouse Creek

Passing under the Coronado Beach Bridge in New Smyrna

We spotted an unusual sailboat in the anchorage

Campers floating down the ICW on a barge

Looking back at the Vero Beach Marina and mooring field

Many dolphin again today.  These were jumping alongside
the boat instead of in front.  Still didn't get a very good picture.

We saw 3 Coasties changing a light blub

Going up the St. Lucie River we passed Manatee Pocket

Rooselvelt railroad and draw bridges
