December 6, Day 176 – Apalachicola to Dog Island

Gerry woke early to check weather, including information received from Tom Conrad, the AGLCA weather guru, and we decided this was NOT the day for our Gulf crossing. Our companion boats, Second Star and Emotion III, departed early for Dog Island where they planned on anchoring awaiting their crossing to Steinhatchee tomorrow. They are doing the Big Bend route and need to be closer to their entrance to the Gulf so they can get an early start.

We walked into town and had a very good breakfast at a local restaurant. We headed out for Dog Island around 11:00. Gerry tried fishing along the way, but met with the same luck as usual …. NONE. We had a good, but chilly, run to Dog Island arriving around 3:00. Emotion III had anchored in a very protected cove but Gerry decided it was too shallow for us, so we chose to anchor in Shipping Cove. This will give us easy access to the Gulf when we leave tomorrow. Second Star also anchored here so we shared one last happy hour with them before parting company tomorrow.

As the sun set, we dinghied back to our boat where Linda made a great dinner (spaghetti and salad). We were able to get a good cell phone signal, so we answered e-mails, worked on the blog and Gerry worked on our route/itinerary for the next few days. Tomorrow will be a LONG day.
We looked on while Second Star and Emotion III got ready to depart

Bye Carole and Michel

On the way out of Scipio Creek we passed several houseboats, one of which was a Massage Palor

Here are 3 Looper boats on the wall at the city marina. I believe they all plan on making the Gulf passage tomorrow.

This is also a Looper boat. It is a converted shrimp boat.

We passed by the historic Grady Market

Best of luck on your crossing. You'll be fine. The anxiety/adrenelin combo is whats tough. Maybe we'll run into you again, though it will probably be after the holidays. Bye for now, Tug Hill Tug/Alex and Cindy

Ebb & Flo,

Crossing was fine - a few bumps and wiggles, and totally exhausted, but fine. Tarpon Springs is a neat little town and we will spend today doing some exploring.
