May 4, Day 313 – Jekyll Island to Wahoo River

Before going to bed last night we had decided the best time for us to depart would be around 10:00. This would take advantage of a rising tide as we transited Jekyll Creek and would get us to Little Mud River during mid-tide. We figured we’d have plenty of water.

We were going to walk to the Grand Dining Room at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel for breakfast, but Linda wasn’t feeling great and decided a simple breakfast onboard would be more appropriate, not to mention cheaper. There was a threat of rain for later in the day, but we decided we would head out and see what the day brought. We left the dock at 9:30, briefly stopping to top the tanks with diesel.

We got through both of the aforementioned “thin water” passages without any problems and were actually making pretty good time. Initially we had thought of anchoring in New Teakettle Creek, but were making such good time Gerry told Linda to find an anchorage further north. With guidebooks and charts in hand, she decided the anchorage on the banks of Wahoo Island sounded like a prime spot so that became our new destination.

A couple of events of note happened along the way: (1) At 11:30 a.m. we were bombarded by deer flies and horse flies (or as they call them here – green-eyed flies). There may also have been no-see-ums, but we couldn’t see-um so we’re not sure. Anyway, the swatting started in earnest. We’re pretty sure they’ll be a part of our trip for the next few weeks. (2) The long predicted rain finally arrived at 2:30 p.m. It was quite the downpour and we had trouble seeing anything in front of us. Thank goodness for the GPS. We turned off the ICW and slowly made our way up the River. Just before arriving at the anchorage, the rain let up enough that we could actually see where we were anchoring and Linda didn’t get soaked setting the anchor.

After settling in, Gerry did a bit of computer work and Linda relaxed and read. Gerry made spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner, then we watched a little TV and turned in. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be better so we plan an early departure.

The bridge and Jekyll Harbor Marina as we departed this morning. It was overcast, but not raining yet

This is not a very good picture, but its a shot of the old Jekyll Island Club where the rich and famous used to hang out.

A shot of the beach at the St. Simons Inlet

Here's what our scenery looked like about 75% of the day -- marshland. Up ahead you can see another boat making its way up the ICW.

This is what our anchorage looked like in one direction -- trees (which we hadn't seen many of since entering Georgia)

Other boats in the anchorage -- there were 4 sailboats and us

.... and the marsh on the other side of the river

Just before nightfall, the sky cleared and we had a nice sunset

... we even had a rainbow
