September 15, Day 94 - South Haven to St. Joseph

We awoke at the “Quack” of dawn this morning. There were about 10 ducks here in the marina that were having a family disagreement of some sort this morning. There was lots of loud quacking, ducks screaming, and wing flapping going on just before daylight.

It was a short run of 3 hours on pretty flat seas with no wind, but very hazy skies. A change is definitely in the air today.

Gerry changed the engine oil and filter today after we arrived. Then, we cleaned up and took a walk into town. Gerry wanted to visit Wolfs Marine Supply – supposedly the largest marine accessory store in the Midwest. We walked forever and finally found the place. It was a hot day, so we were pretty beat by the time we got there. Gerry found what he was looking for, so I guess it was worth the trip. AND - it turns out the they provide free transportation to the place if you are staying at one of the marina, so we got a ride back.

We had cocktails with Ted & Nancy McCarley from Solomon’s Island tonight. They have a DeFever 44 (big boat). They are trying to get to Michigan City tomorrow and we are trying to get to Chicago, but it looks like the wind has finally arrived, so we will likely both be here tomorrow. (We thought we might have lucked out with no lay days on Lake Michigan, but it looks like our luck ran out.)

We had some Lake Michigan trout for dinner tonight – pretty good stuff, but not as good as the salmon we caught. We have one more filet of steelhead salmon left from the fishing trip.

Well, off to bed – we will see what the weather does tomorrow.

This sparrow few on board shortly after leaving South Haven. It hitchhiked all the way to St. Joseph's. It just kept walking around the boat and dinghy eating bugs and flies that are never ending on a boat.

While on our walk to the marine supply store we spotted this sign. Seemed like two unlikely services to combine .... but then I once had a massage at a place that offered a Chinese Buffet after the massage was over.
