HAPPY NEW YEAR!! And on to the next Cay

1/1/2011 – We departed Norman’s Cay just before 10:00 and cruised for a little less than 1 hour to our next destination, Shroud Cay. Shortly after leaving Norman’s Cay we entered The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. This is an area that runs southward approximately 22 miles and consists of 15 major cays and numerous smaller ones and encompasses around 176 square miles. It is a designated conservation area and is considered one of the most pristine and beautiful areas in the Exumas. The entire park area is a no take zone. As one guidebook indicated: Take only photographs, leave only footprints. (That means Gerry has a good excuse for not catching fish as no fishing is allowed.)

We picked up a mooring ball at Shroud Cay provided by the Park Service. This proved to be more difficult than we anticipated as they were a little different from what we were used to. Once settled in we had a quick lunch and then took down the dinghy to do some exploring. The weather was a little “iffy” today. Basically warm, but breezy with a fair amount of cloud cover. Occasionally the sun would peak out making the waters and surrounding land breathtaking. Shroud Cay has several creeks that run from the Bank side to the Sound side that can only be explored by dinghy or watercraft such as kayaks. At low tide most of it is unnavigable. We dinghied to the beginning of the northernmost creek, but unfortunately couldn’t make it through as it was still 2 or 3 hours until high tide. We decided that adventure would have to wait for another day. We did explore the smaller inlets and reefs around the mooring area, walking on several of the beaches before returning to the boat. Just before sunset Gerry pumped up one of our inflatable kayaks and gave it a quick spin. We will probably use them for exploring as we head south.

Mangroves in the tidal water.  There is about a 3 1/2 foot tidal swing
