May 22, Day 331 – In Elizabeth City

Before going to bed last night we had decided to spend an extra day in Elizabeth City. The dockage is free, so why not – and we’re still on schedule to be in Norfolk by Monday (son and grandson arrive Wednesday).

We slept in, but were up in plenty of time to go to the Farmer’s Market at 9:00. Lots of good stuff at the market. In addition to the fresh fruits and veggies there were lots of baked goods, jams, nuts, soup and dip mixes, flowers, herbs, jewelry and crafts. We ended up buying quite a few things in spite of the fact we’ll soon be home. A lot of it just looked too good to pass up. There was also a lady there that was performing alphabiotics. To put it in a few words, it’s a procedure that reboots the brain much as you’d reboot your computer. Anyway, it’s supposed to release stress and balance the brain. She was doing a one-time “reset” for free. Gerry had it done, so we’ll have to see if it makes a difference!!

After the farmer’s market we walked up to the local hardware store and CVS. Since there was a Mexican restaurant right in the same area, we had a quick lunch. Next on the agenda was a visit to the Museum of the Albemarle. It’s always nice to learn about the area you’re traveling through.

We went out for dinner at Grouper’s – the restaurant next to the town docks. Pretty good food, but they were busy so the service was a little slow. We stopped off at Karen Anne on the walk back to the boat and planned our departure for tomorrow.

Here's Gerry -- off to the market

Lots of food and plants offered for sale

At the museum we learned much about the area. This is a shad boat, so named because that's the kind of fish they caught using the boat. This is from the early 1900's. It's also been declared the official state boat.

This is from the 1940's. It's called the Blue Box and is a flight simulator

Any guesses on what this is ??? It's a washing machine from 1902 named "Old Faithful". Wonder if it has a matching dryer.
